The things they actually ask
reeds · transposition · score layout · mutes
Single reed
which instrument?
Clarinet
One thin blade of cane vibrating against the mouthpiece.
Double reed
which instruments?
Oboe · Cor anglais · Bassoon
Two thin blades of cane vibrating against each other.
No reed at all
which instruments?
Flute · Piccolo
Every other woodwind instrument makes its sound with a reed. These two you blow across.
Transposing instrument
what does it mean?
Written pitch ≠ sounding pitch
What is written on the page is not the note you hear. The note you hear is the sounding pitch, also called concert pitch.
In F
how does it sound?
A perfect 5th LOWER
Horn and cor anglais. Lower, not higher — this is the one everybody gets the wrong way round.
In B♭
how does it sound?
A major 2nd lower
Trumpet and clarinet.
In A
how does it sound?
A minor 3rd lower
The other clarinet.
Not transposing
which ones?
Everything else
Only six of the instruments we have learned transpose: piccolo, double bass, clarinet, trumpet, horn, cor anglais. The rest sound as written.
SATB
what are the four?
Soprano · Alto · Tenor · Bass
The four choir parts. Mezzo-soprano and baritone are solo voices and are not in it.
Open score
how many staves?
SATB on four staves
One stave each. The tenor gets a treble clef with a small 8 below it and sounds an octave lower.
Short score
how many staves?
SATB on two staves
Soprano and alto share the treble stave; tenor and bass share the bass stave.
Mutes
which families · what are the words?
con sordini · senza sordini
Strings and brass both use mutes, and both use the same two terms: with mutes, without mutes.
